I've completed nearly a third of the Amy Butler Midwest Modern Quilt. The process is quite relaxing; all I have to do is sew in a straight line, which some days can be more challenging than others! Once I've completed all the squares, I then need to figure out what my border fabric is going to be. Even though I have a container's worth of scraps to coordinate, there probably isn't enough to finish the project. So, I'm left debating if it's worth investing in more designer fabric, or trim and back it in less expensive solids. Thoughts?

I Want It Wednesdays

Anyone else noticing that embroidery hoops as picture frames are everywhere? Pottery Barn had them in a recent catalog, and now I can't go through more than two clicks in my Bloglines without seeing someone's featured. I love them and need to either buy or make some for my home.

This cuckoo clock from Little Pink House is delightful. Her use of space outside the hoop adds interest and character. She has other awesome designs in her Etsy shop here.

Olivia Quilt

My dining room has been taken over by a quilting extravaganza. Several projects are in progress including a quilt for my 2-year-old Olivia. Appropriately, I chose fabric from a line of fabric printed with the character Olivia who was first from a darling series of books by Ian Falconer and now also a cartoon show, which my daughter is a little obsessed with. Olivia is a difficult name to say, and she pronounces it "la-liba."

The pattern is pretty simple - just a basic log cabin. I start with a fussy cut from an illustrated print fabric that I will also use for the backing. Then, I build around it in strips. My challenge is to figure out how to square them all up to the same size before putting on the sashing as each center starts as a different dimension. The sashing will be red (still need to purchase this) as this is Oliva's (the cartoon version) favorite color.

I'm also piecing strips from Moda's Hello Betty honey bun for the circle applique pillow shown on the cover of the Amy Butler book In Stitches. Tonight, Bill is going to help me figure out how to size down the circle to fit my 18"x18" pillow (pattern makes it 29"x29").

Boring to... Better

My entry way looks better, but it did not realize the beautiful potential I think it may have in one DIY spurt this morning. The struggle for me is to make the vision I have a reality... my sewing skills have a lot of room for improvement, and my design skills are amateur at best. Still, I have a passion to make to cultivate my aesthetic. For years, I have conformed to what I thought was acceptable - traditional beige - and ended up with an uninspiring, personal-less space. My goal over the next few months is to make my home cozier - brown and beige be darned! I will use the colors I like, the decorations I love... follow my instincts rather than worrying about what someone might think.

Anyway, this bench project today was a step toward that goal. Actually, it's not a bench but a hope chest my mother gave me when I graduated from college. I had covered a piece of plywood wrapped in batting with chocolate brown satin-ish fabric, and that's how it stayed for years. Bor-ing. Now, it's covered in Amy Butler fabric (bought at the Fabric Shack in Waynesville, OH) and adorned with a knitted patchwork pillow I've worked monogamously on for the last two weeks. I love how it turned out and can't wait to make more pillow covers! The pillow pattern, called Leaf Cushion, is from the Spring/Summer 2009 Debbie Bliss magazine - love her style.

My poor dull hope chest still needs some more work. I'll see what other patterns I can try out - maybe some quilting is in order?!

I Want It! Wednesdays

In case my handmade ever starts to look mass produced, this ribbon will declare the labor of love for me. I can see snipping it around the word and sewing it down on the corner of a quilt, on the back of the neck of a sweater, or on the edge of a scarf. Shipped from France, the cost of a meter + freight is still less than coffee and a scone at Starbucks (when put like that, maybe I'll order 2?!).

Scrappy Projects

I had a productive sewing weekend. Besides finishing the quilted table runner, I also cranked out a quick camera-strap cover from scraps and started Amy Butler's Midwest Modern Quilt - the name seems to fit, don't you think?

The camera-strap cover comes from one of my favorite blogs, Cluck, Cluck, Sew. If you don't already subscribe, do. She has great aesthetic and informative tutorials. It's one of my go-to places for inspiration.

The Amy Butler quilt is a free download available here. I'm making it from scraps left over from my mom's many garment projects. She has tons of Amy Butler - a whole bag of scraps - that she gave me. (Thanks, mom!) I will need to buy for the outer boarder and backing, but that is down the road. For now, I can enjoy cutting and piecing this fun, colorful quilt I plan to put on Olivia's bed.

Sew, It has Been a While

It's been several months since I have blogged. Life has gotten in the way. Busy at work. Busy with home. Busy with school. I have wanted to blog - think about it often but haven't made time for it.

Last weekend, my friend introduced me to the wonderful world of quilting. I have been sewing more lately (and still knitting) but had mostly attempted garments for my daughter. After several frustrating starts and tearful stops, I decided to quit trying to be a seamstress to become a quilter. Quilts are mostly square with no shaping required.

My first project was completed this afternoon - a Scrappy Do table runner made from Moda Charms. Though a fudged my way through several steps (especially the binding), I think it turned out okay. Not bad for a novice.

My next project will be pillow covers for my living room sofa and love seat. Like many, we are giving our home mini Botox injections instead of major reconstructive surgery. Little improvements count these days. I'm thinking of doing a Log Cabin design (like this one). What do you think?

Easter Round Up

I just read a blog post with the title "Is Easter the New Christmas?" Well, yeah, in our house it kind of is. In this economy, I think a little consumerism will go a long way, especially with small businesses that need sales in a bad way. It's practically charity if you think of it that way. I've been picking up little things here and there for Olivia's Easter basket for the last few months, and have found a few fun things to share with you!

Blue Turtle Toys in Oakwood carry Boo Bunny Ice Packs, the cutest things for boo-boos since juvenile-character licensed band-aids. The Boo Bunny has a reusable ice cube in the center that is kept in the freezer until it's needed to make an ouchy "all better." Better yet, bunny is machine washable, and extra ice cubes can be bought separately. (If your house is anything like mine, the ice cube is sure to be lost!)

Never one to pass up a unique beauty product, I snapped up Anderson Soap Company's whipped soap in a jar. Basically, it's a pudding-thick soap to be used instead of shower gel. I think Olivia will have a ball with this in the bath, and for just $5 a pop, I bought two - Sassy Strawberry and Cotton Candy. Can't find the scent you want? Anderson Soap Company makes custom scents.

Half Price Books is a great place to find seconds and overstocks of great books, music, and more. At our local store, I found a copy of The Pigeon Loves Things that Go!, available online at Flying Peas. I paid $3.48 at Half Price, but Flying Peas offers it for just a little more - $7. This series of Pigeon books is adorable - such a lovable character -, and the board-book style will stand up to toddlers use.

"Me" Time

I get up every morning at 4:30 - yes, that's a.m. - to have some quiet time. While sipping on my first cup of coffee of the day, I list an item on LivvySue (have you seen our new flouncy skirts?), check my Facebook account, and then knit and listen to podcasts.

True, I should be getting up and working out (those extra 5 pounds gained from the endless buffet on the cruise are still clinging to my hips). But I've found this hour or so in the morning is exactly what I need to start my day off right - running can wait for evening.

There's something about the stillness of early morning hours that is calming. Knitting is meditative in and of itself - the rhythmic clicks center me. In fact, this is the only time of the day that is mine and that I control - each knit, purl, and cable. Even if the rest of the day is a chaotic mess, at least I had this time, which makes the rest seem more tolerable somehow.

Some of my favorite podcasts to listen to during this "me" time are:

Never Not Knitting: Instantly connected to the host, Alana, who has a daughter about Olivia's age. She has impeccable pattern taste, and I've found myself knit-stalking by casting on several of the same projects she has done.

Knitmore Girls: This "mother-daughter knitting production" is chalk-full of great information on technique. Plus, I secretly hope some day Olivia is as in to knitting as I am and will want to hang out with me like Jasmin hangs with her mom, Gigi.

Stash and Burn: Jenny and Nicole are hysterically funny talking about their weakness for buying yarn. Completely relatable, they are the most in touch of any podcast as to what it means to be a young knitter today.

Bon Voyage

I was barely home in February. Work kept me on the road, and then we went on a cruise the last week of the month to celebrate our 5-year wedding anniversary (where did the time go?). I'm happy to be grounded and getting back to normal - as normal as life can be with a 20-month-old ruling the roost.

Traveling is the perfect time to sneak knitting in. I hit a couple great local yarn stores while in Boston and Chicago. A Good Yarn in Boston is located on a corner of a busy college-town street. Their selection was fantastic - many of my favorite brands like Noro and Rowan and some new to me like Claudia's Handpainted. I ended up buying what I know - Rowan 100% cotton to make Olivia a summer top from this Fruit Loop pattern.

Zora's Yarn in Chicago is located in the front part of the owners home. How lovely would it be to be surrounded by all that fiber goodness? She carries Malabrigo, which I had heard was the end all be all kettle-dyed merino wool but had not touched it in person. Well, let's just say it's everything they said it would be; I walked out with a sweaters worth to make the Lush and Lacy Cardigan.

Cool Recent Purchases and Gifts

I've been lucky enough to be the recipient of some cool gifts recently. My best friend from college sent this amazing birthday gift - a double-sided necklace from Pick Up Sticks Jewelry. Both sides have my initial "S" in black and white motifs. The hammered frame around the charm gives a quirky handmade quality. Buy one for yourself or your best friend online at TooQT.

Another great gift was a French ad screen printed scarf from my mom bought on Etsy from MaryInk. It's made with super-soft spicy red fabric. Every time I wear it, I get tons of compliments.

I've also been doing some shopping myself in an effort to refresh my breakfast nook. We have an L-shaped bench for seating on two sides of the kitchen table. About three years ago, I covered them with the colors I was into then - reds, browns, and yellows. Now, I'm ready for a change toward softer colors and ordered a bunch of pillow covers from Marie's Cozy Cushions on Etsy. She sells two covers for $20 - a great deal. Orders ship from England.

I stumbled upon a new Etsy seller - Byrdie Graphics - which specializes in decals for your home. Her classic modern style is exactly what I'm trying to achieve in my home. It's sophisticated yet approachable. I ordered Birds on a Cherry Blossom in copper brown that I plan to position to look like it's coming out of one of my kitchen windows. Once we return from vacation in early March, we'll repaint the kitchen and put up the decal. I can't wait. I'll post pictures of our redecorating efforts as we make progress.

Sneak Peak... Shhh!

Not much time to write. It's been a crazy day full of mishaps. One trip to Target where upon arriving realized I forgot my debit card and had no other way of paying. (I did, however, have my Starbucks gift card. So, it wasn't a total waste of time. Venti Skinny Vanilla Latte. Yummy!) The next trip to Target ended with me, a crying feverish baby, and a flat tire. Ugh! Thank goodness for random acts of kindness. A total stranger helped me change the flat, kneeling on his coat in the wet parking lot. I tried to give him a $20 for his trouble - or at least for dry cleaning - but he wouldn't accept. Makes me believe in, or at least remind me of, the decency in people.

Anyway, mom is busy sewing. We're getting ready to launch a line of kimono shoes and tops. Packaging is complete with a Chinese takeout box. How cute is that? Check out the sneak peak picture above. Kimono tops and shoes will be available in sizes 0-6 and 6-12, perfect for baby shower or newborn gifts! They're so darling, it almost makes me want to have another baby just to dress her in it!.. Okay, let's not get carried away.

Let's Have an Up Kind of Day

Do you Fly? I do. No, I'm not talking about mode of transportation from here to Florida (although flying is far better than 18 hours in the car!). What I mean is are you a part of the 500k Flybabies? I am.

If you haven't heard about Flylady, bear with me. This might sound a little crazy, but I promise you it has changed my life and can change yours too.

At it's core, the Flylady is a system of routines to help perfectionists be okay with imperfection. The focus is on housecleaning but extends to fitness, fashion, and parenting. The idea is housework is not something that is done too you - not a punishment. It's just something that has to be done and actually "blesses" your family. Parents who model this attitude can instill a healthier approach to chores and responsibilities in their children.

I used to think I had to spend 5 hours every Saturday cleaning my house. Half my weekend was gone by the time I finished! Since I work full time, I don't have the luxury of being home much during the week, and evenings are my precious time with Olivia. Flylady taught me that I can do one thing for 15 minutes every day to improve my house and do things today that will make tomorrow easier. The system allowed me to find time to open LivvySue Boutique with my mom. I just work on it for 15 minutes a day, and presto! a children's clothing and accessories business is born. There's a lot more too it, and more can be found on Flylady's website.

Healthy parenting is a big part of the Flylady system, and her company dropped a CD this fall called Up Kind of Day full of songs to inspire kids to develop routines, eat their veggies, be kind to others, and more. Each song as a specific message delivered in a non-preachy, super motivating way. Even parents will enjoy listening with their kids. We literally listen to the CD every day after work/school. It's become part of our routine. The last song we listen to is the 2-minute Cleanup, which is Olivia's signal it's time to pick up toys and head upstairs for a bath.

In addition, the Flylady and Friends network has a weekly podcast called Give Your Children Wings to Fly. In lieu of finding time to read parenting books (because time for that is non-existent), I listen to this podcast while I work out. Kelly, Flylady's sidekick, hosts the show and has tons of excellent advise on how to teach kids to keep their little lives clean and organized - a key to a successful life. Every episode is chalk-full of excellent tips and tricks; I learn something new every time I listen. Check it out on iTunes by going to podcasts, type in Flylady Kelly. Subscribing is free.

Potty Talk

Going back to the roots of CMM, I have a product recommendation - the Boon Potty Bench.

At Olivia's 18-month check up in December, her ped recommended we buy a training potty to have in the house for Olivia to get used to seeing and try sitting on, but not to actually use. Most girls are apparently able to potty train by age 2.

A co-worker recommended the Boon model, and after seeing it I ordered immediately. I was suckered in by the multi-functional features and general coolness of the product. If you have to deal with wiping butts and endless conversations starting with "Do you have to go potty?" it may as well be done in style.

Boon's Potty Bench is way more than a toilet. It's a toilet, toilet paper roll dispenser, book storage, and step-stool (no pun intended) all in one. Two side compartments flank the seat area perfect for storing tp, wipes, and toys and books to keep little ones occupied while they do their business. Then, when they are finished, the seat has a non-slip cover that functions as a step-stool, perfect for reaching the sink to wash hands. The sleek design comes complete with what they delicately call a "deflector shield." Basically, it is for keeping pee from spraying all over your powder room. Brilliant.

There's lots of potty talk going on in our house now. We're replacing our old cussing habits with new potty words. While it's not as much fun, I will be very happy to free up the money spent on diapers each month. The cost of the Boon was the same as what I spend on a jumbo box at the warehouse club - $34.99. Shipping was about 10 bucks but the order arrived in two days. Even better, 10% of Boon's profits are donated to children's charities.

Whew! Survived the holiday madness thanks to hours of therapeutic knitting. I've been a knitting fool these past two weeks, the longest I've been off work since maternity leave.

Christmas Knitting

Quick update today. I've been knitting a ton recently and have a bunch of FOs to share.

The bag, Double Dumpling, is a pattern published in the fall 08 Interweave Knits magazine. The designer, Sharon Dreifuss of She-Knits sells kits. I bought a couple of them to make gifts this season. They include all the yarn and supplies, including the magnetic snap and faux-wood rings needed to make the project. The pattern, made on size 13 needles, knits up quickly. I had fun with the embroidery vine, too, learning the chain stitch and french knots. I really like the rings on the strap - nice decorative touch. And the yarn, Lamb's Pride Bulky, has a nice organic lamb-y feel to it with little pieces of vegetation still stuck to the fibers.

Who doesn't love an indulgent cup of coffee this time of year, especially with Starbucks and others offering seasonal favs like Gingerbread Lattes. I thought this knitting cup sleeve, pattern found here, would make a nice addition to a gift card. Using leftover yarn used on another project - 100% cashmere! - it is a luxurious quick-knit update to a present.

My silly attempt at an artsy photo (above) is of the Tudora neckwarmer, a free Knitty pattern download. It's for my grandma who is turning 81 this year (I'm sure she doesn't read this - she doesn't even know how to use a mouse - so no surprises given away). It's made out of 100% cashmere - 'cause when you make it to 81 you deserve nothing but the best, right? - by Classic Elite. The blue-green colorway is amazing and has a little tweed to it with flecks of mustard yellow and deep purple. So pretty. I think she will like it. If not, I'll take it back and wear it myself! The button is handmade and was ordered here.

Finally, my crowned jewel, the Debbie Bliss Smock Coat is FINALLY finished. Olivia wore it to our Thanksgiving dinner and did a photo shoot with my sister in-law for our Christmas card, which was promptly ordered from Tiny Prints, which has the trendiest designed cards for the holidays. I would not recommend this pattern nor ever make it again - so much work invested. However, I am extremely happy with the finished product.

The Case for Handmade

This Christmas, I am buying mostly handmade gifts. The people I've told this to are shocked. "What are we getting? Hot glued imported masks?" my brother in-law asked. Others suspect they're getting country-bumpkin roosters and potpourri-filled Santas. Not that there's anything wrong with those things, but my point is that many people don't realize there is a huge market of beautiful, trendy handmade items.

There is a big difference between homemade and handmade. That difference lies in the quality and taste level.

Etsy is a great place, of course, to buy hand crafted products in every style and genre. Here's a listing of stores I've bought gifts from (I'm not going to say what I bought since many of the gift recipients read this blog!).

These fantastic vintage type-writer key products make great gifts for fathers, grandfathers, brothers, and uncles.

For the photographer in your life, these are an ingenious product.

Thankful

Thanksgiving is this week. I must admit that one thing I am hugely thankful for is that I'm almost finished with Olivia's Christmas coat. This morning, I began making the collar, which is a new technique of construction for me. I started with three stitches and added one every other row until there were 21 total stitches. Then I started with the shaping by knitting twelve, turning, and knitting back to the beginning. By doing this twice and then knitting four rows in between, the collar begins to curve nicely around the neck of the garment. It's exciting to watch this happen, because I honestly wasn't sure what would happen when I started.

I decided on the location of the photo shoot for our Christmas card; the gazebo in the Oregon District where by husband proposed to me and where we had many of our wedding photographs taken. The neighborhood decorates the gazebo for Christmas, and it should be a picture-perfect spot for Olivia to model her new coat!

The other picture above is of a top started for Olivia. It has been sitting on my sewing table and needs a little attention. I should be able to finish it during one of my vacation days coming up.

When Will it End?

I realize my problems and stresses are minor compared to many. That doesn't stop me from feeling the stress. This week, I traveled 5 out of 7 days. On top of that, I have a couple freelance projects keeping me busy, am gearing up to start another MBA course, am hip deep in knitting and sewing projects... And, oh yeah, I'm also a mom, wife, granddaughter, daughter. My head feels like it's going to spin off my shoulders!

Focusing on what brings me joy, my family and art, I have devoted as much time as possible to them. I finished a couple projects including this cute Susan B. Anderson elephant pacifier holder and Tudora neck warmer - made of the fabulous Debbie Bliss yarn.

I'm also slogging through Olivia's Christmas Coat, finishing the right this weekend. Once that is finished, the only pieces left are the collar, blocking, and sewing together. Finally.

Dreaming of a Wine-o Christmas

So, I got inspired today to do some serious Christmas preparations and start making the not-more-cookies gift we give to family and friends around the holidays. This year, we're giving bottles of wine in handmade wine totes, which is what I began making today.

The pattern was inspired by a free craft idea from Jo-Ann Fabrics, and I altered it to fit the season by choosing gray felt with red embroidery. The construction is pretty simple; cut two 13.5"x9" rectangles, two 4.5" circles, and one 4" cardboard circle. Sew one of the rectangle pieces on the 9" side, then sew one of the felt circles to the bottom. The second rectangle pieces is lining. So, you sew that up the 9" side and place it inside the constructed piece. Finally, glue the last felt circle to the cardboard circle, stick it in the bottom and voila! You're done sewing.

Next step is to embroider, which I don't have much experience. You Tube is a great source for "how too's," and that's where I learned how to do the blanket stitch used on the handles and around the top. The handles are two 12"x1" pieces of felt stacked and blanket stitched all around. You can either glue or sew the handles to the tote.

The embroidery is going to take a while, but while I'm doing that I can brainstorm what to embellish the sides of the tote with. Martha Stewart's has templates free to download. Maybe I'll find some Christmas-y template and cut out something in felt? I don't know. Post a comment if you have an idea, please.

In total, I sewed 8 totes today, a day well spent. Since I'm so ahead of plan, maybe I'll make wine-glass charms to go with them!? That will have to come after the coat I'm knitting for Livvy, the two handbags I'm making for gifts, not to mention the long list of other craft ideas I have for presents...

So, it all started because I needed bibs with better coverage for Olivia and was feeling guilty for using safety-pinned Ikea towels. My mom and I went to the fabric store and picked out some cute prints, and started brainstorming different ways we could make the bibs. One thing led to another, and we decided to open an Etsy store with sewn items made by us - three generations of girls, me, my mom, and my daughter (our model). LivvySue Boutique was born.

Ironically, we still have not made a bib. We got excited about trying some other things - outfits, mostly, and hair pretties. My expensive taste got us deep into designer fabrics like those by Alexander Henry and Amy Butler that don't come cheap but make darling garments.

Our core item is a pant and tee set. The pants have a wide cuff and an elastic waist with a decorative button, while the tees - both long and short sleeved - feature an applique of a variety of sizes, shapes and placement.

Olivia's Christmas Coat

I'm in a frazzled frenzy to make holiday gifts - so many things on my list and time is extra compressed this year with the presidential election taking up an enormous amount of my husband's time and attention, leaving me basically a single mom until November 4th.

My biggest holiday undertaking is knitting the Debbie Bliss Smock Coat for Olivia. This is what I'd like her to wear in our family Christmas card picture. I've calculated out the inches I have to knit each day to finish by Thanksgiving. Before I began, I was behind schedule it seemed. Seven inches of the back are finished - endless miles of knit, purl, knit, purl, knit... to go. The pattern is from the Debbie Bliss Simply Baby book, previously featured on this blog.

The yarn is from KnitPicks. I love this yarn store because it is affordable, especially for projects that require many skeins. The Smock Coat takes 10! The yarn I bought is DK weight CotLin in Moroccan Red, 70% Cotton and 30% Linen. It feels substantial for an over coat (I plan to make a plaid dress for her to wear under it) and knits up nicely and consistently. The first picture above is from a public flickr album where someone posted their finished garment. The second picture is my coat in progress.

I added another blog to my blog roll - Boston Mamas. If I had time, this is what I would have liked Cool Midwest Mom to be. The writer, Christine, among other contributors, reviews products and services for moms everywhere, not just in Boston. They have regular give-aways, so make sure you check them out.

Finally, we took Olivia to the pumpkin patch last weekend. I experienced the annual trip to Fulton Farms in a whole new light seeing it though Olivia's eyes. Check out the slide show of pictures from our trip on the main page of this blog. It was totally worth the trip to buy pumpkins at a farm and much more meaningful than picking them out of a corrugate bin in our local supermarket. :-)

Kimono Over Here

I'm not so sure about working with a stretch knit fabric. It, well, stretches and makes uneven hems, like on the half-finished kimono pictured above. Just need a little more practice, I guess. To finish, I need to set in the sleeves, make the tie, and top stitch the hems.

The fabric pattern is mod, which I love on little toddler girls. The finished piece will look adorable with her new sailor jeans. The fabric's weight is nice and airy, perfect for a busy baby running around day care all day.

Olivia is sleeping peacefully now, taking her morning nap. I'm going to sneak upstairs to work on it a little more.

Sew Cool

Because I have infinient free time (ha!), I've taken up sewing. Never considered myself a crafter (still REFUSE to scrapbook), but there is satisfaction in making something useful from scratch, like garments. In this tough economy, I don't always have the extra cash to buy boutique, so I'm creating my own. Between knitting and sewing, Olivia is going to have a boutique wardrobe ala mom.

The top pictured above is not complete - the sleeves still need set in and the buttons added. The pattern (by Burda, a cool Euro pattern company) was super easy for a novice like me. I got that far within a couple hours - and that's with looking up directions on YouTube! The whole thing including fabric, pattern (which has multiple options and endless uses), bias tape, and elastic was under $15. A shirt like this in a boutique would retail for twice that.

The fabric on the hanger is for the kimono pattern (also came with the Burda pattern). It's a stretchy knit - a little harder than cotton to work with. I'm going to cut the pieces for that pattern today.

There is whole lot of ugly out there in the crafting and sewing industry (snowman sweatshirt, anyone?). Weeding through the tacky, my goal is to make hip garments and accessories for Olivia (and maybe myself too), and possibly try my hand at designing. Who knows? Maybe I'll have a knack for it.

That brings me to this blog... It's getting to be a hassle each week finding new products to feature, and that's no fun for anyone. The scope is going to change to cover my sewing and knitting projects, but I'll also throw in cool products I find along the way. Postings will be irregular (Hey, I work full time and am getting my MBA. Cut me some slack!) - quality over quantity, right?

The Road Block to Sentimentality

Seems like a baby boom is happening in my office. Smart, energetic women are waddling around doing a slamin' job with their work all while creating a human life. Women are incredible, aren't we? Anyway, one baby after another has been born, and there isn't enough time in my busy life to knit handmade gifts for all of them, as much as I would love to.

All Tied Up CONTEST

My schedule feels all tied up recently... I just returned from a 4-day business trip out west and have no idea what time my body thinks it is (I'm writing this at 5 a.m. EST). There's so much to do at home, let alone the clean up needed at work and with my MBA school projects. And all I really want to do is snuggle up with Olivia and just be with her.

One thing Olivia is enjoying doing is letting me play with her hair. It's become a fun way to spend time with her while getting something done - something for me, something for her. I found these super trendy fabric button ties from Bows 2 Cute, a CMM fav. These "Button Pony Os" are made from a rounded edge metal button with a traditional ponytail holder attached.

Seeing the Forest for the Trees

Just in time for the first of September, a couple trees in my neighborhood began to shed brown, crunchy leaves. Olivia is learning to step on them for the joy of the sound it makes. It puts me in the mood to go for a walk in the woods... almost. But then I remember I hate nature. Nature has bugs... and snakes... ew... City girl through-and-through.

Okay, so even if I'm not venturing into a forest, I can bring the forest to me. Craftsbury Kids, a popular online children's boutique, introduced a Woodland Creature collection that includes toys, shoes, clothes, jewelry, art, and more. Each item is has an old-time feel with modern sensibilities. This Afternoon Tea Jacket is prim and tailored, perfect for my girlie-girl. My four-year-old niece would love this heart-shaped Fawn with Tree Pendent. And I have a thing for this Matryoshka Doll - plus it's only 10 bucks!

Not everything in this collection is as affordable. In fact, I think some of the items are WAY overpriced for what they are. Nine dollars for one hair clip? Really? Olivia loses one a week. At that rate, I would be broke! But overall, the fall-inspired products are cozy and would make a sweet treat for you or a friend as we segue into autumn.

Mom's Turn for BTS Shopping

Our local radio station is running a Back to School Botox promotion for moms. The contest calls for moms to enter a picture of their deepest wrinkle with an explanation of how their kids gave it to them. Some people are outraged by this. I think it's hilarious and fantastic! But while I'm not ready to give an up-close shot of my forehead furrow, I do subscribe to principle of back-to-school shopping for adults. If kids get to freshen their wardrobe, hair, and organization, why shouldn't moms get to too?

To start, I'm getting my hip on at Stevester. Many kudos go to Many Leaves long-sleeved women's tee with silk screened design on a delicious blue cotton garment. The Peacock Poofy Sleeve Top design is gorgeous, and I really appreciate that the T-shirt is cut different than the norm adding texture and interest.

I'm So Proud to Be a Working Mom

John McCain bringing Gov. Sarah Palin to his presidential ticket as the vice-presidential nominee gave me goosebumps. Normally I would not talk politics on this blog; it's more of a space for fashion, toys, and accessories. But I cannot let this historical announcement go unmentioned - it's definitely a girl-power moment and one I am incredibly proud to share with my daughter.

Gov. Palin is an inspiration to working moms, and I am truly wowed by her tenacity taking on the challenge of stumping, debating, and fundraising all while raising a family of five, which includes a five-month-old with Down Syndrome. I was barely ready to go back to school for my MBA with one child! Regardless of your political leanings, one has to admit this is one impressive lady.

What this announcement boils down to mean to me is women can do anything they put their minds to. Anything. There is no limit to our ability. Whatever it is we want to achieve, we can. Not all of us will run for vice-president. Heck, we might not even run for secretary of our homeowners association. Whatever our passion is, the desire of our hearts, if we put a plan in place, surround ourselves with positive people, and keep our eyes on the prize, we will get there.

Another factor in all of this is Gov. Palin's husband, Todd. Without him, she could not have gotten where she is. I feel the same way in my life. Without my husband's support, I could not be working on my master's degree or running half marathons or even working full time. It's the team effort where we encourage each other to get after our goals and aspirations that makes it work.

Okay. This went deep today. I promise a superficial posting next time. Something fun and fashionable.

Speaking of the next post, because I am tied up with school work right now, I'm taking my posting down to 2x per week. It's all I can handle right now. Once I can do more, I will. Thanks for your support.

Who Cut the Dogs Out?

Our poor dogs, Lucy and Mia, are taking the brunt on Olivia's toddler-hood. She does not understand how to be gentle yet so her acts of affection end up being flat-out attacks on their ears and tails. The dogs are mutts - lab-something mixes - we rescued from a local shelter and are docile and loving. They don't even mind when she mounts them and bounces up and down as if they were a miniature pony!

To show Olivia's love for her lab-mutts, I'm dying to order this labrador onesie and pants set from Bella Blu Designs (recently featured on Martha Stewart's show!). The lab silhouette on the top is made from Michael Miller fabric - and notice the dog bone on the pants. Love that!

Slick Sugar and Naartji - two of my favorite places to buy Olivia clothes - debuted their fall lines last week.

Slick Sugar, known for their edgy, rocker looks, dreamed up tops and sets that even classical music lovers won't be able to resist. They've turned up the volume adding more detail to their clothes than in their previous collection. Hoodies are in contrasting fabric, sleeve cuffs are turned, and the graphics have a bit more punch of color.

Cultural Kid's Music that Will Have CMMs Singing Along

Tolerable children's music is a must for CMMs. Enjoyable and educational children's music - well - that is no longer a luxury thanks to innovative Putumayo Kids.

Each CD in their line has a country or regional theme - French, New Orleans, African Dreamscape. The songs, many sung in the theme's native tongue, teach kids (and parents) about the culture in a non-preachy way.

The songs are upbeat and have a positive message. We have the Folk Playground (check out track 2... it cracks me up!) and French Playground (Bonjour, Bonjour is our favorite) CDs and listen to them often. Olivia and I sing along together and it's a great way to pass the commute to and from day care.

Pop Goes the Color

I'm bored with the pillows in my great room. Luckily, we bought brown couches that are easy to punch up with color (and hide Olivia's mishaps!). Some of the chicest pillow choices I've found recently are from Joom.

For $28, take your pick of super-mod designs and colors. Pillows measure 12"x18" and are filled with 100% poly. The outer is silk screened by hand on cotton. If money were no object (and gas not still over $3.50 a gallon), I would snap up one (or two!?) of each design. Darn that budget! I have my eye on Olive Green Full Print Cardinal . There are also mini versions for $16 - I like the Aqua Bird.

These are the times when I long to scrap my home's decor and totally redo everything (my husband would flip!)... I'll get it redecorated eventually... One pillow at a time.

Full Circle

I received an Etsy order today that I have to tell every one about! I ordered the Black Lotus top from Circular Accessories (CA) and adore every soft-cotton inch of it. Screen printed by hand, all designs from CA are fresh and modern. The Black Lotus is printed on an American Apparel shirt. The hems on the sleeves bell out slightly and are unhemmed for a chic effect. I was sold on the lotus design - one on the front and two near the neck on the back.

Packaging makes a product, and Circuclar Accessories knows how to work it. The tee came wrapped in black polka dot tissue paper tied with straw ribbon and topped with a kitchy sweet birdy button pin. It was delightful. I swooned.

I can't wait to place another order at CA. Other favs on my wish list: Teal Peacock, Wall Flowers. There are even great designs for cool dads: Fleur de Lis. And don't forget your little one while you're shopping: Giraffe. So much goodness to be had... Check back often. CA regularly updates their offering.

Trick or Treat, Already?

Someone asked me the other day what Olivia is going to be for Halloween this year. Um... Haven't really thought about it yet. But maybe I should have? Seriously. I'm just trying to survive the summer. Not to mention, the next holiday, Labor Day, is three weeks away.

Even so, mommy-guilt settled in like an unwelcome friend, and I started perusing the Internet for costumes. That lead me to some other cool harvest finds.

I ordered the yarn for and started knitting Olivia a pumpkin hat. Pattern is from Itty-Bitty Hats.

Bows 2 Cute has an adorable assortment of fall bows, including this candy corn bow I bought Olivia last year.

A different take on a Halloween-themed top, this friendly witch tutu shirt will steal the show. Handmade and available at AlanyasCloset.

Blog Roll, Please

A new feature was added to CMM this week - Blog Roll. On the left bar, the blogs I regularly read will be updated with new feed every time they are updated. How cool is that?

We Covet - Better Living Through Consumerism is an irreverent, often hilarious product review blog - mostly household items. Their punchy copy makes me laugh out loud.

Oh Joy is less product reviews and more a display collection of beautiful, quirky products found online and at retail. The writer's taste is impeccable.

Baby Luxe Daily has a similar format to CMM. Their focus is reviews of products for baby and parents.

Pixie Purls is my go-to knitting blog. The writer reviews products, her projects, and also blogs about her BG (baby girl).

Manic Mommies blog and podcast are daily and weekly must-checks. Their real-world take on working motherhood makes me feel not so alone in this hectic endeavour.

Hair Raising Finds

Even though Olivia's hair is still really short, my hair is finally long enough to play with (been growing it out for some time) and am obsessed with buying different accessories. Headbands are a recent fashion fav. They're practical and add a quick punch to an outfit without fuss. That's what every cool mom needs, right?

I stumbled upon an Etsy shop, Jak Boutique, that sells flexible, no-hurt headbands, many made with Amy Butler fabric. Morning Glory and Full Moon Cherry are my picks - fantastic prints. There are more than 50 different headband prints to choose from. They sell for $8 each. Shipping is free if you buy more than one item. With the selection, that won't be difficult.

Jak Boutique also sells hats for little girls. Just look at this one called Summer Rainbow. A little pricy at $30. They also tempt accessory bugs with hair bows, hair flowers, and belts.

The shop is a perfect blend of something cute for our darling daughters and trying-to-stay-hip-selves. What more can a CMM want?

ManiMina, How Can I Resist Ya?

Have you seen Mama Mia yet? I was supposed to go with a bunch of girls from work but ended up being too busy with other stuff and couldn't go. Like most movies, I'll see it when it is released on DVD...

In the meantime, I can shop on ManiMina's Etsy shop. OMG. This stuff is adorable! So on trend, and fairly priced to boot.

I'm loving the kimono and the linen shoes! Both are lined with contrasting cotton vintage-looking fabric, and the best part about the fleece kimono is that it adjusts to grow with baby. The kimono is offered in sizes 0-4T for a crazy-low price of $22. I'm ordering one as soon as I'm finished typing this!

And the shoes... Oh how I wish I would have known about this before Olivia became mobile. But if you're on the market for a show-stopping baby shower gift, buy these shoes! The Element of Fun in Grocery Shopping

Don't know about you, but I'm paying at least 30% more for groceries today than a year ago. It makes me sick to my stomach. Because of my day job, I understand what vendors are going through in their own cost increases, but as a consumer it is a hit to our family budget.

Enter The Grocery Game, and online resource for coupons and discounts. Here's the gist: Members get access to lists from their local grocery and drug stores that tells them what is on sale plus has a coupon available so members get the ultimate deal. For example, salad is on sale for $2.00 plus there's a coupon for $1.00 off.

The Grocery Game keeps a huge database of what is the best deal on each product. They color code the list by okay deal (black), stock up now because it's the best deal (blue), and FREE! (green). Yes, free. There are times when the sum total of a discount plus coupon is $0!

The idea is that you stock up on the best deals even if you don't need the product creating an inventory in your home of toothpaste, soap, noodles, soup, etc.

A nominal fee of $10 per eight weeks for one store gets members access to the weekly list. Members have to be disciplined to clip coupons each Sunday, otherwise the system is pointless. What's the best deal I ever got? $92 in groceries for $13!

Bonjour, Bebe Tam Tam

How smug does this sound? I bought Olivia a tambourin imported from France.

Well, I didn't do the importing. I bought it at a boutique (Ashley and Hilary, which sadly closed last week...). But it is from France, nonetheless.

Tam Tam by Pylones Paris is a miniature kids' tambourin decorated with Euro-looking artistry (I bought the bunny). Recommended for 12+ months, they are about 6" diameter, les perfect for small hands. The sound they make isn't overly obnoxious, but I'm sure it will eventually get old. Product retails for $20.

Pylones makes other great products not easily found at mass retailers like maracas, jump ropes with funny bugs on the ends, and robot time-out timers. They aren't the cheapest option around, but they sure are tres temptingly adorable. You too will fall l'amour with them.

Fiber Freak

I got my knit on while vacationing. Over 4 days, I made a handbag (out of 100% cream wool), finished a tank for my daughter, started a tank for myself, and finished a two hats using patterns from Itty-Bitty Hats by Susan B. Anderson, available new on Amazon.com for around $12.

From Itty-Bitty Hats, I knitted the hat on the cover in navy and light blue and the stripey stocking cap on pg. 99 also in navy and light blue cotton, both for co-workers who recently had little boys. The patterns were easy and fast - perfect for a busy mom. The i-cord took forever on the cover hat (for non-knitters, that's the thing that ties at the top). That's my only complaint. I also found a couple great knitting podcasts. My top pick is Pixie Purls. The host, Brandy, has a sweet voice and direction in her topics of discussion. She talks about kitting controversies (yes, there is major drama in the industry), her latest projects (she even spins her own yarn (fiber)!), and things she covets (new needles, etc.). I get the sense she has good taste and wouldn't knit something horribly tacky (unfortunately, not everyone in the knitting world has taste, proven by the slew of UGLY patterns out there). I felt so fortunate this week getting to spend some time on Chautauqua Lake with our dearest friends. We boated, swam, water skied, wined and dined to our heart's content. Olivia bonded with her grandparents while hubby and I soaked up the sun... and did a little shopping.

As luck would have it, I hit a sale before leaving for vaca and bought Olivia the Fortune Tee (pictured left). Based on fortune cookies, they feature a snarky quote ("Treats come to those who behave." "Drool is the nectar of knowledge.") and Lucky Numbers. This one and a couple other long-sleeved ditties are on sale for $13, regularly $17. Check out the short-sleeved versions too.

Don't Wine About It

Nothing gets under my skin more than a whinny kid. I say "use your words" about a zillion times a day to Olivia. She knows enough to say, "more please" and "that please." Stop with the high-pitched sass already!

That's where wine comes in... The adult version.

Seems like we're always on the way to a get together this summer. I'm constantly on the prowl for chic ways to present wine to the hostess. The Winepocket, available at Elsewares, is not a thrifty option, but it is chic.

The premise of This Next is to rave about products yourself or see what others are raving about. Shopable by category, the site tells visitors where to buy the product, lets them recommend the product, and allows them to add it to their wish list to purchase another day.

Visitors choose their level of interaction. They can window shop, comment on others' recommendations, shop others recommendations, or post their own products. It's a fantastic way to find out if something you're thinking of buying is liked (or disliked) by other consumers.

Knitting is Bliss

My very patient mother in-law taught me how to knit a few years ago. For a long time, I dabbled making scarves - low risk, mindless projects. Then, she recently gave me a Debbie Bliss knitting book with patterns for babies and yarn to start a sweater project. It was the nudge I needed to fly out of the straight line scarf nest and spread my knitting stitch knowledge base.

I've had so much fun with this project. It's not perfect (that makes it "special," right?), and to date only about half finished. The book along with the Internet (and emergency fixing sessions with said knitting teacher) has assisted me through the pattern.

If you're thinking about learning to knit, Knitting Help has a great Web site on getting started. If you are like I was - fearful of making anything other than a scarf - try something like a simple hat. Like my mother in-law says, you can't undo life, but you can undo a knitting project and start over.

Scenario 2: You're a busy working, traveling mom who just landed in another city for a business meeting. Your colleagues are around and you don't want to call home yet. So, you Twitter a message to home saying you landed and will call later. Fast, easy, done!

Scenario 3: You have family living in all corners of the world, and it seems you never have a half hour to call and catch up. Keep up with each other with Twitter. It's a virtual way to stay connected and have a feel for each other's lives. Voila!

I nursed for about eight weeks. They were the roughest eight weeks of this baby experience. My hat is off to the women who can make it work longer than I did. Unfortunately, it did not work out well for me for many reasons...

But if I had nursed longer, I would have bought one of these cool necklaces for breastfeeding moms from Baby Friendly Beads. Etsy is so addicting. If you aren't familiar, Etsy is a hugely popular online store where people can buy and sell handmade and vintage items. Many of my posts feature Etsy shops. Pouncing is the most cumpulsive of all things Etsy, which is when you click "Pounce" and the site shows the last few items bought by people all over the world. I love seeing what people buy - and it proves once again there is a market for EVERYTHING.

I Pounced and came upon something quite good, Little Lily - Lily Sky. Lily Sky's shop specializes in children's clothing, accessories and toys. They feature these pinafore dresses (Freshcut Flowers pictured above) that are darling - I want one in every design!

The fabrics are eclectic but appropriate for little girls. The designer is a cool midwest mom from Chicago who says she is inspired by retro, vintage, Indian and Asian materials. Items are custom made and are available in sizes 3 mo. to 6T.

Birthday Party Ideas

I'm going to use today's post to pat myself on the back. My husband and I co-created an elaborate, cost-effective first birthday party for Olivia last weekend. The color scheme was pink and orange - a very hot combo now - and the theme was princess (I know, cliched, but couldn't help but indulge).

Here are some of the ideas we came up with (or were inspired by someone else) that worked really well that you might be able to incorporate into your next posh party.

1. The invitation sets the tone. Instead of doing the normal blah-blah invite, we jazzed it up with this copy: Princess Olivia is turning one. You're invited to her palace for a party. Date. Time. The (insert last name) Castle. (insert street number and name) Court. The Kingdom of (insert city). Regrets only.

2. I made a birthday banner using felt and letter stencils. The felt was cut into triangle flags on which I put a letter of a different color. All the flags were strung together with yarn and hung on our mantle. We'll keep this and use it every year.

3. As a keepsake, instead of a guest book we created a time capsule for attendees to write notes to Olivia to open on her 50th birthday. We provided slips of paper that prompted with "Dear Olivia" and "Love." The time capsule was an old paint can my husband cleaned up.

4. Little kids swinging bats frightens me. For a pinata, we found a company, Celebrate Express, that makes bat-less princess version that has ribbon hanging from it. One of the ribbon rips the pinata open for the candy to fall out. Each kid took a turn pulling a ribbon until the "right" one was chosen.

5. Crown and tiara making as an activity went over really well with the kids and adults. My mother in-law came up with this idea and bought all the supplies. She had the pre-shaped foam and foil paper for the shapes. Then she had all kinds of decorations like gems, letters for names, and even boa trim.

6. I turned Olivia's highchair into a throne by using removable foam mounting squares to secure pink netting around the trey. I decorated the netting with rhinestone gems.

Okay, have I bragged enough? We had a blast at the party and hope our guests did too. Many of the things we did were homemade and saved us a ton of money. Maybe you'll be inspired by my ideas. And if you have ideas you want to share, be sure to post a comment!

Today is Miss Olivia's 1-year birthday, and I'm taking a vaca day to spend extra-special time with her. One thing I like to do on mornings were not rushing out the door to day care and work is make a hot breakfast. A family favorite is shaped pancakes.

If I don't write things down, they don't happen. Life is coming at me too fast to keep track of it all, and lists are my saving grace. And when I feel overwhelmed, stopping to write down all my thoughts - buy more diapers, send birthday card to so-and-so, schedule eyebrow wax - makes me feel more in control. They're just words on paper, but they somehow make sense of the craziness.

I've been a little gender biased featuring more cool stuff for little girls than little boys. That's hard to help since I have a daughter and my eye is naturally attracted to things for her. Plus, cool stuff for little boys is difficult to come by. But my friends with boys who read this blog have gently pointed out, "Hey! More stuff for our studs, please." And I aim to please.

Thanks goodness for indie brands offering sons an alternative to dinosaures and dump truck primary-color striped tees. Popidiot is one such indie company offering XY trendy tots fashionable frocks, although their products are gender-neutral.

I can count on one hand the number of times we've taken Olivia to a restaurant this year. We just don't eat out often as a rule, but adding a baby to the mix makes it a special challenge. I love stumbling across music gems, which is exactly what happened when I heard Ellery one evening last spring as they were the opening act at a concert. From the first heart-felt note, I was hooked. Their fresh sound is an engaging blend of folk and pop with insightful lyrics that reach out grab the listener.

Enter at your own risk during dinner time at our house. It's total chaos. What's really going down is Olivia having fun at our expense. Food is flying, dogs are running, I'm yelling at the dogs to stop running for the flying food. Madness, I say. Madness.

I'm hoping Boon is the answer to my dinner time prayers, enticing Olivia to eat like a polite-society young lady. Their Groovy plate has a slip-resistant base and four customizable food compartments. Olivia is big. I mean so big her pediatrician commented during her 9 month check up that Olivia is as big as a one-year-old. Terrific. My kid is going to be the giant of her class and never get asked to a dance because she'll be taller than all the boys.

Maybe I'm overreacting, but there certainly are down sides to her size. Like the fact that she can no longer wear baby clothes - this shocked me the first time I had to shop in the toddler section. Sniff. My baby is no longer a baby!

But if she could wear infant clothes, I would totally order this Kimono set from Shop Intuition. Zutano. Humor me. Just say it out loud. Isn't it a fun word? Well, it's also a great line of kid's clothing available online and at boutiques. Their babies basics come in fantastic vibrant colors and prints, and the best part is they mix and match each season, which makes the clothing budget stretch a little farther. Love that!

Sizing starts at 12 months and goes up to a child's 6. Coordinating accessories are hard to resist, including sun hats and headbands for the little ladies. Tees start at around $15. A little high for frugal moms maybe, but watch out for sales at boutiques that carry the line.

My diaper bag is stuffed to the brim. It is ridiculous. How does one little being require so much stuff? The wipes, the change of clothes, the toys, the extra pacifier, the diaper-changing pad, and let's not forget the diapers. Seriously! And now that Olivia is officially eating solids, we have to find room for snacks and sippy cups.
